My mug was handmade for a heartfelt cause. With a Zulu-inspired design, this natural earthenware mug screams uniqueness. The sculpting of this mug involved many hours of practice and perfecting the many features included. The creating process started by wedging the clay to remove air bubbles, then using the slab technique to make cut-outs of the shapes I would be using to construct the mug. As soon as these shapes were cut out, I expertly combined the pieces to form the final mug shape. Once the mug dried to the point where I could glaze, I made great use of the sgraffito method to etch out the geometric design. This process was, however, not without difficulties, seeing that the mug has no handle, though its beauty was preserved. As a South African, I am proud to create and present designs that reflect cultural brilliance and my personal identity. In knowing that 100% of the proceeds from the selling of the mug go to the Ikemeleng Foundation, feeding 600 people a day, I made this mug with an "Art that Feeds" mindset. Whether this mug is used for a morning coffee, a soothing tea, or a warming hot chocolate, every sip can be savoured, knowing this mug was purchased to feed a soul and uplift a community in need.
